Welcome to another Speed Render episode from Rob Art Illustration! In this time-lapse video, I take you through the full creative process behind my latest digital caricature: a darkly humorous portrait of the legendary author and poet, Edgar Allan Poe.
This project started with a simple pencil sketch, where I focused on exaggerating Poe's most iconic features—his brooding eyes, sharp cheekbones, and distinct moustache. The goal was to strike a balance between caricature and portraiture: amplifying his melancholic intensity without losing recognisability.
Capturing the emotional weight behind his gaze was crucial, given Poe's literary connection to themes of despair, mystery, and the macabre. The preliminary sketching phase involved multiple attempts to find the perfect balance between exaggeration and authenticity.
One of the most enjoyable parts of this illustration was including his ever-present companion: the raven. Perched on Poe's shoulder, the raven adds both symbolic meaning and compositional interest to the scene. Its sharp eye and textured feathers provide a nice visual counterpoint to Poe's pale skin and sombre suit tones.
The raven serves as more than just decoration—it's a direct reference to Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poem, "The Raven." This literary connection deepens the artwork's meaning while creating visual storytelling that resonates with viewers familiar with his work.
The entire painting process took place in Adobe Photoshop, spread across 32 individual layers. In this speed render, you'll see each stage unfold—from rough blocking and colour mapping to texture detailing and final lighting adjustments.
My workflow uses a mix of soft airbrush tools for shading and textured brushes for detail work, especially when building skin tones and hair definition. Each layer serves a specific purpose, allowing for precise control over shadows, highlights, and texture development.
The digital painting technique combines traditional portraiture methods with modern digital capabilities. Custom brush settings help achieve realistic skin textures while maintaining the stylized caricature aesthetic that makes Edgar Allan Poe's features memorable.
The colour palette for this piece draws heavily from Gothic inspirations—deep burgundies, muted greys, and inky blacks—all selected to echo Poe's literary mood and era. Special attention was given to the lighting setup, adding a dramatic spotlight feel that helps bring his intense expression forward.
These color choices weren't random—they directly reference the dark romanticism movement that Poe helped define. The palette creates an immediate emotional connection between the artwork and his literary themes.
For those interested in digital caricature techniques, this video gives insight into how I manipulate facial proportions while still retaining the subject's personality and presence. You'll notice how the eyes were enlarged slightly and the cheeks hollowed to give Edgar Allan Poe a more haunted, tired appearance—fitting for a man often associated with dark romanticism.
The exaggeration process requires careful study of Poe's historical photographs and portraits. Understanding which features to amplify and which to minimize is essential for creating recognizable yet stylized interpretations.
The speed render format compresses hours of work into just a few engaging minutes, making it easy to follow the evolution from concept sketch to final artwork. It's a great way to see how mood, expression, and atmosphere are built up gradually in digital painting.
This time-lapse approach offers valuable learning opportunities for aspiring digital artists. Viewers can observe brush techniques, color mixing strategies, and layer management workflows in real-time.
