A good look

Is not a laughing matter

From a previous commission I was contacted by Yves Macak. A German comedian, who you may remember from this commission. He wished to extend his commission base with three new works. We decided to start with one new piece that was strikingly different from the previous one. Yves requested I painted a hyper-realistic portrait of him, from a given photo. The challenge was one.

“PORTRAYING HUMOUR” – BRIEF

The outline of the brief, set by Yves Macak, was simple, to create a realistic illustration based on a given photograph. The supplied photograph showed Yves wearing a green jacket and sporting a beard. There was no other real aspect that need to be considered, apart from it being realistic.

THE CONCEPT

As this was a straight forward rendering of the image as an illustration, there was not that much to consider, apart from I did sketch the shape out a little different to make it a little caricature than normal, but only a tiny amount.

Once the sketch had been successfully completed in Photoshop, the rendering stage took part. All the elements were achieved on different layers for ease of correction, and was painted over a five day period to allow time for the correct amount of detailing. The overall effect was surprisingly good and realistic.
