Blind to the surveillance!

Putting the camera on the regime

German client requested the third in a series of three, based on the ‘three monkeys” analogy of ‘See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.‘ This is the ‘see no evil‘ in the form of Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The client requested a basic image, but I thought it better with a background, so this is how it ended up.

"Portrait Caricature” – BRIEF

The brief was set to basically show Xi in a framed state or portraiture, and with several CCTV cameras on a mast. The eyes of Xi were to be pixelated as to obscure them slightly, and that was basically the premise of the scene. Nothing more was needed, as the narrative was about surveillance.

THE CONCEPT

Even thought the brief was limited, and not even requiring a background, I thought it important that the image had some context, so I decided to place the required frame in the position of Mao Tse-Tung’s portrait in the Imperial Palace, which also gave a little background to the camera standing outside. So, I rendered out Xi in Mao‘s costume and found a good reference image of the area and rendered out all the background as is at the palace. Finally a set of 4 different reference images were brought together to combine to make enough cameras on the mast to be effective. These were all rendered from sampling the colours from one and making them blend together as if on the same mast. To give the piece some depth I rendered out a shadow against the wall.

The whole thing took three days to do, with the camera detailing taking the longest. All in all it worked out very well, and has a nice sense and feel to the piece.
