Ratatouille Parody

Ratatouille - Blood Sweat and Tears!

Cooking up a new rendering!

After the initial project over at Fiverr Pro I quickly received the second. This one proved to be a more daunting challenge. Needless to say, I jumped to the challenge of doing this rather complex illustration, for a UK based catering service called “Blood, Sweat and Tears“. The aim of the Gig (as they are called) was to do a parody caricature mock-up of “Ratatouille” style kitchen as in the movie’s famous Gusteau Kitchen.

Ratatouille

“RATATOUILLE – GUSTEAU’S KITCHEN” – BRIEF

The outline of the brief was a simple idea to create an illustration for a livery scheme for their truck. The complexity was to give an optical illusion of the side, to make it look like an inward box that was styled like a kitchen. To complicate it even more, the style of the kitchen was to follow the Ratatouille kitchen, from the movie.

THE CONCEPT

The basis behind the illustration was to emphasis the link with catering/cooking to the movie “Ratatouille“, which wasn’t hard as the idea of Gusteau’s kitchen was already there. The concept was born to do a simple reworking of the movie kitchen from a SketchUp model (See Behance project here) and to make it fit inside the dimensions required. As the briefing grew the idea turned into a bigger effort as the referencing was hard, but also the time scale to add five caricatures and the requested details, meant a 13 hour day for 8 days.

The sketch was made within the first three days of the twelve day schedule, and all the elements came together well. Trying to complete the rendering while maintaining some closeness to the movie images was hard, but worked out in the end. The artwork was going to be rendered out in my typical style, using my favourite brush for the job. I eventually did two variations on the final piece; with one having a staged blurring to give the better perspective depth (see below).

DETAILS

Client: Jamie Bicknell
Illustration Tool: Photoshop CC 2018
File size: 2.26Gbs/5.19Gbs (open)
Layers: 176 uncompressed
Dimensions: 15000 x 8049px/600dpi
Hours (Preparitory): 16 hrs
Digital rendering: 82 hrs

Initial Sketch
Final Render

The following image shows the rough concept behind how the illustration will be rendered as the livery on the van.

Whilst I was developing the illustration it crossed my mind that the effect of depth could be enhanced if I did staged gaussian blur on the elements as they came forward. So, I made the different depth sections into smart objects and applied a gaussian blur at different variable to slowly draw it to clarity.

As part of my typical rendering process I have made a time-lapse rendering process video. You can see it by simply clicking the Subscribe button and join my YouTube channel. I would appreciate the follows, as in the near future I will be doing new tutorials as well as uploading many time-lapse pieces of my works.
