I was asked by LiLiPi company some time back to participate in a commissioned artwork for a collection of artworks to represent the social media animal celebrity “Manny, the most famous French Bulldog“. Being a dog lover and also companion dog owner to my best friend, Honey, I took up the challenge.
The company and Manny‘s owners provided me with several reference images and I was challenged to make a representation of him. As my style follows a painterly hyper-realistic approach I decided to do a combo rendering of the dog. I didn’t like the pose of their given reference images, so after some research I found some angles I liked, which made it a little more dynamic. I began work on the piece.
To characterise the dog breed a little better and to have a little humour to my realisation, I added a French cravat to the image. This was to emphasis the French Bulldog aspect of the breed.
As with all my artworks I tend to begin with the head details and work down, and this one was no different. Luckily I was given a very good reference photo and the detailing was very evident and clear in the process. All in all the image took 3 days to complete and as a bonus, and thinking of sales, I decided to use the cravat as a convenient border point, and did a head shot version as well.
