Swing - Vintage Caricature Portrait
Rendering down memory lane!
After several projects over at Fiverr Pro I suddenly received the oddest request. This one proved to be a more daunting challenge. Needless to say, I jumped at the challenge of doing this rather odd illustration, for a US based grandson. The aim of the Gig (as they are called) was to do a parody caricature of an old favoured vintage photo of a father (he is the small boy) and his father, on a park swing, in a vintage 50’s photograph.
“SWING” – BRIEF
The outline of the brief was a simple idea to create an illustration from an old vintage photograph. The complexity was to give the photograph a caricature feel, and to add necessary detail to the illustration where the photograph was missing it.
The basis behind the illustration was to create a retrospective portrait of a loved photograph. The basis was the connection between a father and grandfather, seen in a vintage photograph. Instead of just doing a simple rendering of the photograph, the client requested it be done as a caricature.
The issues involved in the process were that the quality of the vintage photo was compromised with age, scanning and colour changes. There was little in the way of detail in the image, and the scanning process had created some abnormalities in the colour areas. Nevertheless, the process continued, with a sketch set-up render being created first to OK the look. From that a slow rendering process was taken. Slower than normal as detailing and to be created rather than sampled in typical cases.

As part of my typical rendering process I have made a time-lapse rendering process video. You can see it by simply clicking the Subscribe button and join my YouTube channel. I would appreciate the follows, as in the near future I will be doing new tutorials as well as uploading many time-lapse pieces of my works.

1 creative person, slightly matured
2 tablespoons aptitude
1 piece of aesthetic flavouring
6lbs hard work and sweat
4 ideas more than most
salt of the earth to taste
Take a creative person and stir in some aptitude, thoroughly from the start. In time, mix in the aesthetic flavouring with the most appropriate tool at hand, and then, fold into the mix as much of the hard work and sweat that the mix can take. Sprinkle in the ideas; the more the better. And finally, as all is cooking, a pinch of ‘salt of the earth’ to give it the necessary character. Leave to cook over time and serve when required. Tasty treat in a tasteless world.
