Opening up with Contrado
The Contrado connection: I have been doing POD sales since June 9, 2011. I feel I am a good and qualified artist, with a recognisable style, that portrays quality, humour and uniqueness. Saying that, these are not the only attributes that can help you succeed in the world of online sales. In come Contrado.
It is a very tough world, and day by day it is getting tougher, as new and competing POD sites open their doors to all and sundry as far as creatives (or lack of) goes.
It’s quite a nice sign of respect when you are selected by a site that is invite only, and you are given the opportunity to develop a good look and feel. I tend to make most of my sales in this manner. Hoping a little exclusivity is what is required to get the audience interested in the artwork on offer.
Being in the big, overly populated sites like Society6 and RedBubble tends to mean you get lost, and if never ‘Found’ or never following trends in carbon copy styles then you face a very hard, uphill battle to get the sales you need to make this life work.
Recently I managed to get hooked up to Contrado; a UK-based POD site that has just began to allow artists to sell their wares on their site. I am pretty excited about this, and am eager to get the collaboration started. For two months now I have been slaving away to add the works to the products: a small range to start with, but will be added to as the time and popularity dictates.
To help this all along Contrado has set a opening offer code on my products so you can not only enjoy the quality and service of this great company, but also get it a bargain introductory offer. Use Code: ROBART20 when doing your check out to receive the offer.
Some points about Contrado, as stated on their website, which really impressed me:
The Contrado difference
Made in London, UK
We have all our staff in our London facility. We do everything locally, here with low transport footprint. From our customer service team, our developers, analysts and web designers, our product designers, our printers and most importantly our skilled technicians. We design, print, cut and make everything here in London, from Boxer Shorts to Bomber Jackets. Sourcing staff from local London boroughs, and as far afield as Japan and New Zealand we promote a fun, diverse and creative atmosphere, where “everything is possible”. We source a large amount of our fabrics from UK mills, ensuring strong relationships and continuity of product lines. Our core values are to support and nurture creativity and originality, and change the way people buy lifestyle products.
Being able to control every step of manufacture under one roof allows us to keep quality high, delivery times fast and to always improve our processes and products. We value and support our technicians, from fabric printers through to our sewing dept. Ensuring a friendly and productive workplace with potential of progressing through the company, and always learning new skills. We value the skills new employees can bring to our team.
What impresses me about the Contrado connection? There are so many things that can give reason for my need to tell you that buying from the online store is a must. The products are hand made quality items. So, don’t get fooled by the prices. These are all the best quality items you can get. They are made and printed in house in the UK, and the materials are all sourced from Europe as well as being eco-friendly.
But apart from that, as the designer, there is an extra element. The friendly approach to their team is great, and makes working with them such a treat. Your emails actually get a human response, unlike some places I can mention. The designer part of the website can also offer so many possibilities that it almost becomes limitless. For me though, the nice part is that I can personalise the products. Buying an Animal Behaviour Tee or even a Celebrity Sunday Tee means that they have a unique branding attached to them. If you see the images below, you will see that each design will come with large print area, a motif printed back to authenticate the brand, and even a personalised label, so you know that it’s Rob Art products you are getting. All-in-all they are far above the rest in style and quality. The store side also allows you to choose the material and weight so you don’t need to just buy polyester sublimation prints.

More points about Contrado, as stated on their website, which bring it home:
All our inks are water based, non-toxic and disposed of via a local waste management company. Our eco-friendly print process means no contaminants of any kind enter the water course. Unwanted post-manufacture fabrics and garments are safe for recycling, up-cycling or donation to our local clothes bank.
We source most of our fabrics from inside the EU. Knowing your suppliers on first name terms is a bonus for us, meaning we can keep quality and continuity at the highest levels possible. We always ask about where fabrics have come from, demanding safe working practises and fair wages. More and more, as the customer and environment demands it, we are aiming to source fabrics from eco-approved production chains, such as OEKO-TEX® and GOTS. We have recently added our first group of organic cottons, sourced from approved mills.
1 creative person, slightly matured
2 tablespoons aptitude
1 piece of aesthetic flavouring
6lbs hard work and sweat
4 ideas more than most
salt of the earth to taste
Take a creative person and stir in some aptitude, thoroughly from the start. In time, mix in the aesthetic flavouring with the most appropriate tool at hand, and then, fold into the mix as much of the hard work and sweat that the mix can take. Sprinkle in the ideas; the more the better. And finally, as all is cooking, a pinch of ‘salt of the earth’ to give it the necessary character. Leave to cook over time and serve when required. Tasty treat in a tasteless world.
